We are seeking a Social Specialist to join our Mining Environmental team. This team is involved in a diverse range of projects undertaking ESIA, social & environmental management plans, permitting, mine closure and post-mining regeneration, due diligence, mineral expert reports and feasibility studies. The team works closely with our other minerals teams in Almaty, Beijing, London and Stoke on Trent to provide consulting services across the whole range of metal and non-metal solid mineral resources.
The appointment will be at Senior (T05) grade though Principal (T04) grade may be considered for suitably experienced candidates. The post holder will report to the Technical Director for Environment and ultimately to the Director for Mining.
Responsibilities will include:
- Undertaking and managing projects involving:
- social and economic impact assessment,
- public consultation and stakeholder engagement,
- resettlement action planning,
- post-mining social and economic regeneration,
- corporate social responsibility and
- impact of/on artisanal and small scale mining.
- Preparation of plans, reports and other deliverables, contribution to team reports and quality control of output for which you are responsible.
- Managing your tasks, time, workload and productivity to efficiently manage and deliver projects for which you have delegated responsibility.
- Developing a team of social specialists and the range of social and CSR services to clients as part of the overall business plan and mining services offered by the company.
- Managing staff and project teams under your supervision, project management with responsibility for project costs and deliverables, dealing with clients, billing.
- Contribute to and, when required, lead business development activities of the team, preparation of bids and proposals.
Regular travel overseas will be required, mainly for short duration missions (5 to 15 days) though longer missions may be required from time to time. Missions usually involve longer working hours and weekend working, sometimes in difficult circumstances and with basic amenities and facilities as such you will need to be resourceful, able to work unsupervised, able to manage risks and take decisions on your own initiative.
You should have at least a degree in Social Science, Socio-Economics, Social Anthropology or similar Technical area, or be from a mining or geological background with subsequent experience in social impact assessment. You should also demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit and a depth and breadth of experience appropriate to the demands of the grade as outlined. Relevant technical experience of 5 to 7 years minimum would normally be expected for a Senior appointment; project and team management skills and a track record in the mining sector are highly desirable. Excellent communication, data analysis and report writing skills are essential.
